Making an instrument to order is much more than just physically carving the wood. To Per S. Ovesen, the process integrally involves the player, with whom good communication and understanding is essential.

From choosing the wood and model to deciding on pegs, strings and fittings for the instrument, the player's opinion is always taken into account; after all, it is he or she who will play the finished instrument in the years to come.
